Modded Minecraft server guide

Pick a mod loader, upload your pack and choose enough RAM for it.

Choose enough RAM

Bigger packs want 12 GB or more of RAM. Modded 12 and Modded 16 run on our high-memory dedicated nodes. Modded 8 lists 8–20 recommended players, Modded 12 15–30 and Modded 16 20–40.

If your pack needs more than your plan has, email [email protected] to change plans, or add the +2 GB RAM add-on ($6/mo), which works with any plan. Add-ons are set up after you order: send us your server name and the add-on you want.

Pick a mod loader

You can run Forge, NeoForge or a CurseForge modpack. You choose the loader on the checkout page when you order, and the server is set up for it; pick the loader your pack was built for, because mods are normally built for a single loader. The Startup tab shows the version settings for the loader your server uses. If you later need a different loader, email [email protected] with your server name and the pack and we switch it.

Upload your own pack

  1. Get the pack's server files from its author. Many packs publish a separate server pack.
  2. Upload them with the Files tab, or with SFTP, and unarchive any zip file in the file manager.
  3. Check the loader and version settings on the Startup tab.
  4. Start the server from the Console tab and watch the log.

First start and later changes

A big pack takes longer to start than a vanilla server, so give it time and watch the console. Make a backup before you add, remove or update mods. A bad change is much easier to undo from a backup than by hand. See Backups and restores.

Modded servers are Minecraft servers too. The Minecraft guide covers the EULA and the Startup tab settings.

Update or change your pack

  1. Create a backup on the Backups tab, and lock it so it stays.
  2. Upload the new pack files with the Files tab or SFTP.
  3. Update the version settings on the Startup tab if the new pack needs it.
  4. Restart from the Console tab and watch the log until the server has started.
  5. If something is wrong, restore the backup you made in step 1.

Nightly restart and backups

The nightly restart is on the Schedules tab. Modded plans include 3 to 5 backup slots, depending on the plan.
