Minecraft server guide

Choose a server type, accept the EULA, change your settings and add plugins and mods.

Pick a server type

You can run vanilla or Forge from the catalog. For Paper or Fabric, upload the server jar yourself with the Files tab or SFTP, then set it as the JAR file on the Startup tab. Plugins and mods need a server type that supports them. For bigger modpacks, see the modded Minecraft guide.

First start and the EULA

  1. Open the Console tab. The server installs and then starts on its own.
  2. When the console asks, accept the Minecraft EULA as the server owner.
  3. Wait until the log says the server has finished starting, then join with the address from your welcome email.

Change your settings

Open the Startup tab. The settings there include the message of the day, game mode, difficulty, maximum players and a whitelist switch, next to the version and JAR file. Changes apply the next time the server starts.

The whitelist switch only turns the whitelist on or off. Add and remove names with the whitelist command in the Console tab, for example whitelist add PlayerName, or edit the whitelist file in the file manager.

The world seed only applies when a new world is generated. Changing it does nothing to terrain that already exists.

Install plugins and mods

Install plugins and mods from Modrinth in the panel, or upload your own files with the Files tab or SFTP. Restart the server afterwards. Make a backup before big changes so you can undo them, as described in Backups and restores.

If players cannot join

  • Check the address from your welcome email.
  • Make sure the server has finished starting. The log on the Console tab shows when it has.
  • If the whitelist is on, add the player's name.
  • Players need a Minecraft version that matches the server's version, which you can see on the Startup tab.
  • Check our status page.

Plans, restarts and backups

Pick the plan by how many players you expect. Minecraft Starter lists 10–20 recommended players, Minecraft Standard 20–35 and Minecraft Plus 35–60. You can change plans later by emailing [email protected].

The server restarts automatically every night, with in-game warnings first. You can see it on the Schedules tab. Minecraft plans include 2 to 4 backup slots, depending on the plan.
