Before you start
You do not need a custom domain. The server address in your welcome email always works. A custom domain gives your friends a name that is easier to remember, such as play.yourdomain.com. You need a domain you own and access to its DNS settings.
If you would rather not touch DNS, the Custom domain set-up add-on means we do it for you. Email [email protected] with your server name and the domain you want to use. Without the add-on, you follow the steps on this page yourself.
Minecraft: add an SRV record
- Find your connect address in the welcome email or on the Network tab. It is a host name and a port.
- In your DNS provider, add an SRV record named
_minecraft._tcp.play.yourdomain.com. - Set its target to the host name from your connect address and its port to the port from the same address. Leave priority and weight at the values your DNS provider suggests.
- When DNS has updated, enter
play.yourdomain.comas the server address in Minecraft, with no port.
Other games: add an A record
- Find your server address and port in the welcome email or on the Network tab.
- Add an A record for the name you want, such as
play.yourdomain.com, that points at the node address. If the address is a host name rather than an IP address, add a CNAME record that points at the host name instead. - Players put your port after the name when they connect, as in
play.yourdomain.com:PORT, using your server's real port.
Quick answers
Do I need a custom domain?
No. The server address in your welcome email always works. A custom domain only gives you a name that is easier to share.
My domain does not work yet. What should I check?
DNS changes can take a while to spread, so wait and try again. Then compare the record name, target and port with the steps above, and check that you used an SRV record for Minecraft and an A record for other games.
How much does the set-up add-on cost?
The Custom domain set-up add-on costs $5 one-time. It is a single payment, not a monthly charge.
